As network technologies have evolved, the need for Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) has diminished. However, STP is still needed in some cases to prevent loops. Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) is a modern, software-defined networking (SDN) solution that uses an overlay model. This means that STP is not needed with ACI because there are no physical links between devices. The ACI fabric is made up of leaf and spine switches. The leaf switches are connected to the spine switches via ports that are configured as “uplink ports.” The leaf switches do not have STP enabled on these uplink ports.
